Learn some new skills
If you haven’t been in employment in a while your digital skills might not be what they use to be. Never fear – there is a multitude of free online courses available.
- Google Garage has a selection of online courses designed for you to grow your career. You can select individual modules, or dive right in and take an entire course end-to-end.
- LinkedIn Learning offers online courses on a wide range of Microsoft Office programmes from beginner level to advanced and includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. They offer a free month worth of training, so sign up and make the most of what they have.
- YouTube – it’s not just a vlogging and influencer platform but hosts thousands of useful tips and guides for any skill that you may be looking for.
Social media
Social media has become a part of everyday life for many, both in and out of work and is a great source to help with your job hunt.
LinkedIn is an especially valuable tool in your job search, make sure your profile is up to date and then build your profile by connecting with old colleagues, recruiters and individuals in any industry that may be of interest.
Use social media to follow organisations, charities, individuals, stay on top of sector news, and engage in conversations. Don’t be afraid to let people know that you are looking to get back into work; many recruiters use these platforms, particularly LinkedIn, to find candidates!
Volunteering or temporary work
You might think that volunteering or temporary work is not suitable for you – but why not! It’s a fantastic way for you to ease your way back into the working environment. You can learn new skills, gain new experience and find a role that fits around your schedule and needs. You never know, it could lead to a permanent role.
