I don’t think people have any idea of the diversity of work that charities do, and the huge range of skills they need.
Change never ‘just happens’. It needs to be led, but not necessarily by you.
Your job, above all else, is to think: make sure you give yourself time to do that.
I’ve always wanted to do something valuable with my life, and the idea of working for an organisation that existed to make money was never appealing.
It’s been challenging to learn a new way of working, but realistically the goals and aspirations are the same, as are the issues.
Being involved in strategic development, writing board reports, and developing partnerships, while at the same time having oversight of services and holding on to some of the details can be a tricky tightrope to walk.
My experience to date has proven to me that confidence is a journey and not a destination, because I am constantly developing and learning new things…
My heart and mind are in the crucial charity sector because it changes people’s lives directly.
I believe that the finance function exists to help organisations secure their goals and make an impact within the community.
