Clare Algar joined the Sigrid Rausing Trust as Chief Executive in January 2022. Clare has significant expertise in leadership, strategy and management. Most recently, she was Senior Director of Research, Advocacy and Policy at the International Secrateriat of Amnesty International, and before that was Amnesty’s Global Operations Director, working with the newly set up regional offices.

Before working at Amnesty, Clare ran the human rights organization Reprieve for eight years, overseeing huge impact and growth. Clare started her career as a corporate litigator and made partner at her firm before moving into the not for profit world. Clare has an MA in law from Cambridge and a further legal MA from St. Mary’s College, London.

What was your first job?

Shop Assistant.

What is the best piece of leadership advice you’ve been given?

Be gracious and generous

What or who is your most admired purpose-led organisation or person?

Darren Walker – Ford Foundation.

What do you do to help ensure good mental health?

Exercise and walks outside with dog.

What is the most impactful leadership decision you’ve made?

Leaving law firm to run NGO.

What is your dream job? (Apart from your current one!)

One that involves living in Italy by a lake.

Favourite place to eat?

Really anywhere with friends or family.

Keeps me young.
