Welcome to our charity job spotlight series, where we shine a light on people and their great work in the charity sector. The series covers why they work in the sector; what their job involves; and career advice for those looking to either come into the sector or progress in their career.
Why have you chosen to work in finance in the charity sector ?
Almost all of my career has been spent working for organisations with highly visible social values. I believe that the finance function exists to help organisations secure their goals and make an impact within the community.
What do you think makes someone successful in your profession?
First of all, having empathy for your employers and colleagues. Then demonstrating objectivity and integrity and been able to develop and promote financial plans and strategies.
What skills have you learnt which are the most valuable?
To be able analyse facts and figures and to write clear financial reports and to present them with conviction.
What did you personally find to be the biggest challenge when making the step up to Head of Finance role?
I think, making the transition to contribute to the broader corporate management of an organisation, rather than just manage its finances.
What is your proudest achievement ?
All of the people I have seen develop in the teams which I have led. The testimonies in my leaving cards tell me if I have done a good job and I enjoy leaving a legacy of improvement.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to make the move into their first senior leadership role ?
Network within your organisation and with stakeholders. Listen and learn what is happening in the leadership team and what the pulse is with staff. Convey hard financial messages with respect and humility.
