Prospectus was appointed to lead the search for a new Chief Executive Officer at a pivotal moment for Cochrane. A globally respected authority in evidence-based healthcare, Cochrane works through a worldwide network spanning more than 190 countries, supported by a UK-based central executive team. As the organisation progressed its 2024–2027 strategy, the Board sought a CEO who could provide clear strategic direction, strengthen financial sustainability and represent Cochrane confidently on the global stage.

The Brief

Reporting to the Chair of the Governing Board, the CEO oversees a £10m+ organisation and leads more than 120 staff, while acting as Cochrane’s principal ambassador with partners including the World Health Organization, major funders and government stakeholders. The successful candidate required scientific credibility, experience of leading complex international organisations through change, and the ability to engage and unite a diverse, globally dispersed community around a shared vision.

Our Approach

We conducted a global search with a strong UK focus, targeting senior leaders across global health, research, academia and the charity sector. Emphasis was placed on values alignment, organisational leadership and experience operating within regulated environments. The role attracted 132 applications, with 11 candidates progressing to interview following a rigorous and carefully structured assessment process.

The Outcome

Following a comprehensive search, the Governing Board appointed Dr Karla Soares-Weiser. Having served as Editor in Chief and Acting CEO, she brought deep knowledge of the organisation, established relationships with key international partners and a strong track record of leading strategic and editorial transformation. A medically qualified psychiatrist with a PhD in Evidence-Based Medicine, she combines scientific authority with inclusive, collaborative leadership. Her appointment ensured continuity at a time of change, while positioning Cochrane to strengthen its global influence and deliver on its ambition for a more evidence-informed world.
