- Role: Director of Philanthropy & Partnerships
- Lead Consultant: Rhiannon Mehta
- Date of Appointment: September 2025

About
Impetus transforms the lives of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds by investing in high-performing education and employment non-profits. Through long-term funding, pro bono support, strategic expertise and policy influence, Impetus helps more young people secure the education, qualifications and opportunities they need for a fulfilling life.
The Brief
Impetus were looking for a new Director of Philanthropy and Partnerships to be part of their Senior Leadership Team and be responsible for growing annual income from £10 million to £12m-£14 million within the next few years, as well as securing £2m-£3 million in pro bono support. Impetus also required someone who understood their commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, as this was ingrained into their values as a social mobility organisation.
This appointment required an unusually broad mix of skills: a leader with a demonstrable track record in high-value fundraising (including complex, multi-stakeholder relationships), the strategic capability to refine and deliver a sophisticated engagement programme, and the people leadership needed to inspire and develop a large, high-performing team—while operating as a visible senior representative for Impetus’ work.
Our Approach
Working closely with Impetus’ senior team, we delivered a structured, insight-led search process that combined a targeted market mapping and outreach strategy across senior philanthropy and partnerships leaders in mission-aligned organisations and relevant adjacent sectors; a rigorous assessment against outcomes, prioritising candidates who could evidence income growth, long-term stewardship, and the leadership of multi-layered teams and a candidate experience designed for senior talent, with clear milestones, consistent communication and thoughtful support throughout the process.
The Outcome
Impetus appointed Harbi Jama as Director of Philanthropy and Partnerships, strengthening senior leadership capacity and supporting the organisation’s ambitions to grow philanthropic income, deepen corporate partnerships and accelerate impact for young people. Harbi brings a strong track record across high-value corporate partnerships and philanthropy, most recently as Head of Development at The London Community Foundation, where he led new business across corporate and individual giving and developed multi-year, five- and six-figure relationships. His earlier roles include Corporate Partnerships Manager at Refugee Action and Corporate Partnerships Manager at Breaking Barriers, alongside wider experience spanning project management and mission-led growth. He also brings governance insight through trustee roles and committee work, supporting inclusive, strategic decision-making at board level
