Welcome to our leadership spotlight series, where we ask each leader 10 quick-fire questions so that we can give a little insight into the person behind a leadership role.
What was your first job?
Doing the papers at WHSmith on a Saturday morning. First ‘proper’ job: selling records to record shops.
What is the best piece of leadership advice you’ve been given?
The best was the worst: “lower your expectations”. It inspired me to seek out a new environment and new ways of working.
What or who is your most admired purpose-led organisation or person?
Cemal Ezel at Change Please & more.
What do you do to help ensure good mental health?
Exercise has almost magical powers for me!
What is the most impactful leadership decision you’ve made?
To shift focus from me as a CEO to the wider leadership team.
If you needed some sound advice, who would you call?
An old friend who’s been on a similar path in a totally different sector.
What is your dream job? (Apart from your current one!)
Effortlessly writing timeless works of literature.
Favourite place to eat?
Italy. India. Or, failing that, I’ll go to E. Mono in Kentish Town.
Why are you in the purpose-led sector?
I have the privilege of being able to choose a career – to not use it purposefully seems such a waste.
What are you currently watching or reading?
Re-reading Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. Watching ‘How To With John Wilson’.
Thanks so much for taking the time to speak with us, Alex.
