Hospice UK is the UK’s national charity for hospice care and the membership organisation for hospices. In early 2016, Hospice UK’s then new Chief Executive Tracey Bleakley came to Prospectus shortly after joining the organisation with a requirement for a brand new role, Director of Communications and Campaigns. The aim of this role is to bring the leadership needed for them to make a step-change in how Hospice UK communicates internally and externally.
We were seeking someone with strong experience and expertise in developing and leading the delivery of a communication strategy with a clear vision and evidence of what could be achieved; the ability to work at a strategic and visionary level whilst managing the detail and complexities of delivery without relinquishing the focus on the end goal, and the influencing skills needed to bring staff and stakeholders along with plans and bought into the vision.
A search campaign combined with targeted online advertising and social media exposure was conducted which produced an excellent range of applicants. 6 candidates were interviewed and an offer made and accepted. Unfortunately the successful candidate withdrew several weeks after accepting the offer as they took on a role elsewhere. Whilst this was extremely disappointing Hospice UK was keen to go back out to the market and Prospectus launched a new search which resulted in a further successful round of interviews.
Sue Wixley was appointed and joined in December 2017 after more than 10 years at charity consultancy and think tank, NPC. Sue brings a breadth of skills, including strategic communications, brand management, digital marketing, media management, internal communications, public affairs and stakeholder engagement.
