Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex appoints Chief Executive

Following a search led by Prospectus, we are pleased to announce the appointment of David Welch as the new Chief Executive of Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex.

Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex (AAKSS) saves lives by providing the best possible care every minute of the day, every day of the year. They are a life-saving and pioneering charity providing essential pre-hospital emergency care to trauma patients throughout the South East. AAKSS prides itself on its innovative medical approach; they were the first UK air ambulance service to fly 24/7; they undertake clinical and research trials and they are currently trialling an inter-hospital transfer service.

With a recently developed new strategy, AAKSS sought a Chief Executive to advise the Board on the best approaches to maximise their ambitions. This included ensuring a diversified income portfolio and a people strategy to harnesses innovation and development. They sought a successful leader with experience of developing aligned, collaborative and performance focussed cultures, and a proven track record of building influential relationships with external partners. We searched for candidates who were inspiring and engaging strategic thinkers who enjoyed leading organisations through periods of change and development, particularly from emergency, health and locally based charities as well as commercial, FTSE 250 candidates.

David Welch was appointed to the role. David pursued a successful early career in retail management before switching track to lead fundraising teams in international aid and development work.  David then led health-related charities in Scotland and the north of England as CEO. He is a Council Member of the Association of NHS Charities, a member of the Institute of Fundraising, a former Rotary Club Founder Secretary and President and former Chair of the National Association of Hospice Fundraisers.

Helen Bowcock, Chair of AAKSS commented “Prospectus clearly understood our brief and have achieved for us an outstanding result. As a highly experienced CEO with substantial experience in the health and charity sectors David is an excellent match for our requirements and we are delighted with this appointment”.
